Get your mind out of the gutter. A shuttlecock is used in the racquet sport of badminton. This symbol is iconic in Kansas City. The had four large aluminum and fiberglass shuttlecock statues donated to them in 1994.

A married couple by the names of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen created the statues. Many Kansas Citians did not know what to think of them initially, but you will see their imagery practically anywhere you see mention of Kansas City.

There is nothing I love more than exploring the city with my family. The Nelson happens to be one of the best free experiences around town. Note: donations are appreciated, but not required or pressured. It is one of the best activities in KC, without a doubt.

To be honest, I spend more time outside of the museum than inside. There’s something special about observing the natural environment of the grounds.
