Nearly 5 months have passed since I committed to shooting exclusively black and white for a year. During this period I learnt a lot about black and white film in general, how it handles and also started developing an eye for it — that is I can visualise how a photo will look.
Having said that, I have come to the conclusion that to further my photographic growth I have to make some adjustments to my process which will hopefully benefit me in the long run.
In this article, I will try to summarize what I have in mind.
Removing the limitation of black and white
So much for commitment! But let me explain…
These past months I have been shooting more film than usual and I found black and white film a real joy to shoot. Pushing film and shooting in low-lit situations was a godsend and having committed to shooting black and white when on vacation helped me overcome the fear of missing out when shooting black and white.
What made me decide to introduce colour was my next trip to Venice which I will be revisiting next month. Although I was committed to shooting in black and white, upon further consideration I felt it would be better to shoot in the same colour film so that I can continue building on my…
