SALTON SUITE: PART 5 OF 5

A Quiet Trailer By The Sea

March 2020. All photos by the author.

This is the 5th and final part of a 5 part photo essay, about a series of road trips around the Salton Sea from September 2008 through May 2023. You can view Part 1 here, Part 2 here, Part 3 here, and Part 4 here.

Highway 78, which runs north and south along the west side of Salton Sea, is much busier than Highway 111 on the east side, as it takes us through Salton City and its small northern neighbor, Desert Shores. Big rigs carrying agricultural goods from the Imperial Valley flow along this route, along with tourists for the off-road vehicle areas to the west. That’s probably why the population is actually slowly increasing here, although local businesses continue to languish in favor of the mega-gas stations seemingly preferred by visitors.
