A Lactation Consultant’s Advice for New Moms
Breast is best / the only way
Don’t forget, breast is best.
Breastfeeding is the primary way to bond with your baby. Kissing her or saying “I love you” doesn’t count.
Be patient with yourself. Breastfeeding takes time to figure out, like 30 minutes tops.
Breastfeed “on demand” whenever your baby shows signs of hunger. Better yet, do it now.
Do it in 10 minutes, preferably 5.
If your baby is sleeping, wake them to feed. If your baby is not sleeping, you’re feeding them, right?
Frequent breastfeeding promotes healthy weight gain and makes your baby more photogenic.
Eat a healthy diet when breastfeeding. Fruits, nuts, your own mother’s milk, etc.
Latching is everything. Make sure your baby has most of your areola in her mouth until she is 30.
Keep an eye on your baby’s dirty diapers to gauge how feeding is going. The more dirty diapers, the better. When not breastfeeding, spend your time looking at shit.
Use nipple cream on sore nipples and on sandwiches.
