The Legal Loophole That Enables Heinous Crimes
Juvenile rapists and murderers don’t deserve leniency
The horrifying news from Chattisgarh’s Bilaspur district in India— a 14-year-old boy luring a four-year-old girl with chocolates, attempting to rape her, and then brutally murdering her — should shake our conscience.
Instead of facing real punishment, this juvenile has been sent to a correction home, shielded by laws designed to protect children, even when these children commit a monstrous crime.
It is time we ask: if a 14-year-old is capable of such unspeakable brutality, why should he be treated as a mere misguided child instead of a violent offender?
At the time of writing, a similar case has emerged, involving a 17-year-old boy who is being tried as a juvenile offender for brutally raping a five-year-old.
