Once upon a time, Johnny Halliday sang “Give me the darkness, so I can enjoy light.” Jean-Jacques Goldman wrote the lyrics. He was always spot on, but this time, he got it wrong: the light is everywhere and we’re craving for more.

Common sense — the gem of human intelligence, something AI can’t reproduce — has left the building. We dub ignorants as kings. We grudgingly follow the breadcrumbs of imbeciles. Elon Musk a genius? If you can’t see the difference between fact and brain fart, you’re an idiot, not a genius.

We’ve traded our brain potential for comfort and amusement. And elected officials have followed, treating society like temperamental children rather than reasoning adults, in a never ending quest for maintaining their fragile electoral pools. And here we are: the planet is trying to spit out the pest we have become; power-addicted autocrats are rising, and we ask for more.

Our democracies are failing because we forgot that our institutions needed to be strong and our leaders obedient and respectful, not the other way around.
