As all hell breaks through with global repercussions from Washington, D.C. in every aspect of life and death, I am reminded of a gift I received on my tenth birthday in April 1968 from my grandmother’s eccentric brother, whom we called “Uncle Dave.”
An 8–1/2 x 11-inch envelope contained two photographs of Senator Robert Kennedy (D-NY) and his family. The brother of JFK, he served as his and Lyndon Johnson’s Attorney General after the November 1963 assassination, before becoming senator in New York.
When I received the birthday gift, it appeared Senator Kennedy was on his way to becoming the Democratic candidate in the coming November election against Richard Nixon.
Two months later, Dave gave my younger brother for his birthday a check for a million dollars, which obviously was fake. I remember my father, who was planning to vote for Nixon, being upset at Dave for giving a 7-year-old child such a bizarre gift, especially since the week before RFK suffered the same tragedy as JFK.
