Not all children have close friends that make them feel seen and validated. When should a parent be that person, and how do we know that this is what our child needs?
I t’s time we acknowledge that the armchair advice of the masses for raising a child is nothing more than a handbook of hymns written by someone who thinks all children require the same techniques to ensure their success. We must look at this oversimplified advice like any other that may not be relevant to your unique situation.
Parenting approaches that involve strict and harsh methods are often associated with certain terms. While the popularity of physical punishment like spanking has decreased in recent years, imposing specific lifestyles on children who don’t respond well to them can have negative emotional consequences that last throughout their lifetime.
Some commonly used phrases in such parenting approaches include:
- If your kid has a tantrum, ignore it
- Too much affection spoils a child
- Keep them on a strict routine
- Always keep them busy
- Kids have to clean their plates
