Mexican Presidenta’s Popularity Rises Amid Trump´s Threats and Tariffs
Some world leaders, including Mexican Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum, have benefited from standing up to Trump
One of the effects of US President Donald Trump’s second term has been the increase in popularity and support for politicians from Mexico, with the Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to Europe, with Emmanuel Macron in France and Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine, as they confront threats from the White House, such as tariffs.
“Instead of simply kissing the ring, these leaders simply stand up and politely say ‘no,’ and their voters appreciate the fact that they are not being colonized,” Nathalie Tocci, director of the Rome Institute of International Affairs, told the Financial Times.
Mexico in particular has been the target of threats — of military action against the cartels, labeling them as terrorist groups; and of tariffs on Mexican imports to the United States, the latter as a measure to pressure greater border control over migration…
