An Invasion of the Body Snatchers is Under Way
Is it already too late?
Last weekend a yearning came over me. I was in the mood for horror, but seeing as it’s my favorite genre, anything new worth watching has already been consumed. I decided to turn to the classics and ask my husband, “Have you ever seen Invasion of the Body Snatchers? The one from the 70's?”
Nostalgia crept in through the TV screen from the opening credits, which were unmatched by modern content in their ability to linger. Everything was a slow burn back then, even when it wasn’t. This was a first watch for my husband, but for me it felt hazily familiar, like a memory I forgot I had.
Growing up, I loved pointing out “pod people.” They were the conformers, brown-nosers, and the dead-eyed. The people without personality mechanically moving through their lives. The ones in church with their hands raised high above their heads during a soft rock worship song. Nothing made me more uneasy than a massive hall full of people with their eyes closed giving themselves over to the unseen.
I never liked the feeling of following so many people anywhere. It can be useful to find your way, but I’ve never been able to do it without a question. Is this really the best way? The quickest way? The safest way? Places where questions were unwelcome felt off, like they were…
