Trump and his Orwellian doublespeak: expensive is cheap, expensive is good
Another week and another Trump whim to ruin it — at least for working people, in both the United States and Mexico — with the announcement of a measure that will make Mexican tomato imports more expensive for the American consumer.
The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday, April 14, reported most tomatoes imported from Mexico to the United States will face duties of 21%.
“This action will allow U.S. tomato growers to compete fairly in the marketplace,” the department said in a release.
The next day, Mexico responded:
“If they want to do it, they’ll pay 20% more for their tomatoes,” said Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué, at Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s daily press conference.
“What will be the consequence of this? Their tomatoes will be more expensive; they can’t replace us with another country”, he .
