Double Drabbles are finely tuned short fiction tales of exactly 200 words. This one had to include the word “rust” and be about a pet talking in riddles. We were enjoined to scrupulously ensure “rust” was not used as a proper noun.

“You’re gonna have to trust the rust,” said Rusty, Nancy Rust’s
formidable Border Terrier.

“What did he say?” asked Angus McDrabble to Nancy, who was sitting comfortably in her rusty old chair on the edge of the terrace.

“Something about trusting some rust,” she replied, “although what that’s supposed to mean, I haven’t a clue, do you?”

“‘fraid not old thing. My mind’s rusting out on this Old Rustifarian Gin,” wheezed Angus. “But don’t you think the really odd thing is not what he meant, but that he said something at all? I mean, dogs speaking in riddles is quite a feat, but a dog speaking at all surely tops it all!”

“Oh, not old Rusty. He’s always had a lot to say. The odd thing is, he’s always spoken in riddles, like some rusty old oracle.”
