I Was Just Doing My Homework

It pays to watch the (analog) clock

Today’s random word is grotesque, with a twist of including a quacking duck.

“Croak-quack, croak-quack!”

Emmy tried re-gripping but Dragglebeak the (half) duckling fell to the ground in a tangle of frantic feathers and unfamiliar froggy feet.

“Sorry,” she whispered, scooping him up, “Ms Nivinia will know what to do.”

Her teacher emerged from the staff room. “What’s this racket?”

Then she registered Dragglebeak, one wing draped over Emily’s forearm, one bulbous-toed foot poking out from underneath.

“Ah, the first of the grotesques,” Ms Nivinia sighed. “You spun anti-clockwise when you chanted the spell, dear. Common mistake. Mark my words, digital watches will be the death of magic.”

It’s been too long since I drabbled, but now I’m on holiday I’m so happy to dive back in and what glorious prompts to get the creative juices flowing! Huge thanks to

and the team at Fiction Shorts who are there day in, day out, keeping the drabble fires alight.

I really enjoyed the unexpected tone in

’s drabble:

I write whimsical stories of colour, excitement, joy and revenge. And I'm kind of fascinated by words and language. And play, especially in teens and adults.
