It was all fun and games until Bella decided it was Gertie’s turn.

Other kids were swimming, eating ice cream, or running under sprinklers. But her mother had dragged her to work.

At least her tantrum had ensured her pet chicken, Gertie, watched while she played magicians in the courtyard.

“Here,” Bella tucked her wand under Gertie’s wing.

A rumbling bok-bok-bok rose from the bird.

Bella froze as the wand glowed, the ground splintered and hundreds of worms surfaced.

“Help yourself,” Gertie directed Bella towards the writhing mass. “No magician of significance ever worked on an empty stomach.”

What would your pet do if they got hold of a magic wand?

It’s summer in Australia — apologies to everyone reading this in their winter woollies!

Thanks, as always, to the team at Fiction Shorts for curating such wonderful prompts.

I write whimsical stories of colour, excitement, joy and revenge. And I'm kind of fascinated by words and language. And play, especially in teens and adults.
