Literacy is Liberty!
Having large segments of our country unable to read and comprehend information is a national security concern.
Literacy is more than just the ability to call words on a page or being able to read a stop sign.
It is the ability to make meaning and gain an understanding of what is said and more importantly, what isn’t said.
It is being able to read between the lines and draw conclusions.
Literate people can hear or read something and recognize the author/speaker’s purpose or even a hidden agenda.
Literate people can recognize fallacy, conjecture, and deceitful propaganda.
Literate people demand a source, and then they can evaluate that source for credibility.
- Is this author/speaker qualified to give this information?
- Can this information be verified by other sources?
- Does this even make sense?
Being literate means being a critical thinker…being able to draw from prior knowledge of history, science, psychology, and sociology to make connections and draw rational conclusions.
