Biking in PE Class
How I created lifelong adventures for my students
Every child should learn to ride a bike.
Maybe that’s just me, but I believe it. Children need to feel empowered. A way to escape. A way to fly. One of those ways is riding a bike. They can ride like the wind alone or race their friends. They can bike with their family throughout the neighborhood or on bike paths. Kids can experience freedom by riding a bike.
That’s where we come in as educators.
Many parents teach their children how to ride a bike. Being a parent, I know firsthand that it’s not easy. My daughter went from training wheels to daddy letting go in no time, but my son took a lot longer. We tried the balance bike, which has no pedals, because we heard that would be an easy transition to riding without training wheels, but he didn’t do well with that. Then we went back to training wheels until he finally got it.
Some children do not get taught at home.
Whether it’s due to finances, work schedules, or just a lack of good parenting, many children don’t learn to ride a bike during their elementary school years. It’s sad, but true. I’ve seen it first hand at my school and in my neighborhood.
There are ways to help.
