Off The Beaten Track Adventures In Montenegro

Landing In Montenegro

It was only a three-hour flight from England to reach the tiny country of Montenegro, which is home to just 600,000 people. As the plane approached the airport it flew over the Bay of Kotor, one of Montenegro’s top sights and it looked incredible from above, resembling a Norwegian fjord.

My boyfriend Craig and I knew Montenegro was a small country but we didn’t realise quite how small it was until we arrived at Podgorica airport. It’s the capital city yet the airport was tiny, security took five minutes and our bags were already on the small conveyor belt.

As die-hard budget travellers we refused to pay for a taxi from the airport, we also only had €5 to our name as the ATM in the airport wanted to charge us 10% interest so we had no choice but to walk to the train station.

A grassy track beside the road led us to the station which was only a kilometre away but it had been a year since we last backpacked so the weight on our shoulders from our bags was quite intense.
