It’s not a joke… , there was a time in the 19th Century United States when people actually ate “Arsenic Complexion Wafers” to keep their skin free of freckles, pimples and other blemishes.
The product package actually read: known to be poisonous. But many people in those days believed that consuming Arsenic was safe in small doses. Apparently, they were mostly right — although a few people did die even from ingesting the smallest amounts.
Still, this poison succeeded as a beauty product and was openly advertised in American newspapers to great sales results in the 1800's.
Talk about dying for beauty!
