Switching from Textile to UI/UX? Read This First

4 min read14 hours ago

A stylized digital illustration showing a transition from textile/fashion design to UI/UX design. On one side, fabric swatches, sewing tools, and fashion sketches. On the other, digital screens with UI elements, Figma interfaces, and user journey maps. The visual represents a career shift from traditional design to digital design.

I’ve come across many people from textile and fashion design backgrounds — both final-year students and working professionals — who are trying to make the switch to UI/UX design , often without even understanding what it truly entails.

And here’s what worries me the most:
They’re spending thousands of dollars on courses that promise the world but deliver only about 15% real knowledge , mostly focused on consumer-based apps like Uber or Instagram. 💸📱

Just take a look at this stat:

Over 1,138,389 people have enrolled in the Google UX Design Certificate on Coursera (👉 guilty, I’m one of them too). While it’s a great starting point — especially if you get it under financial aid — it’s clearly structured to help you land a job at Google , not prepare you for the broader design industry.

The templates and case studies from the course are now becoming template-driven portfolios , which are losing value in a saturated market. For absolute beginners, sure, it’s a good foundation — but don’t treat it as the holy grail of UI/UX learning.

🚨 So, Are You Really Interested in UI/UX?

If you’re serious about switching to UI/UX, please validate yourself first . Ask questions…
