“ The Lies We Tell Ourselves (And Why We Believe Them) “

--

We all have an inner voice that whispers things to us—things we assume are true, things we never question. But what if some of them are lies? Not the kind others tell us, but the ones we tell ourselves.

These lies shape the way we see the world, our worth, and our abilities. We believe them so deeply that they start to feel like facts. But are they really?

Here are some of the most common lies we tell ourselves and why we cling to them:

1. “I’ll Be Happy When …”

We convince ourselves that happiness is waiting for us—after we achieve something, after we become someone. But when we get there, we find another “when.” The truth is, happiness is never in the future; it’s in the present, in the way we choose to see things today.

2. “I’m Not Good Enough”

This lie is the root of self-doubt. We compare ourselves to others, focus on our flaws, and ignore our strengths. The truth? No one feels “enough” all the time. Growth happens when we accept where we are while striving for where we want to be.

3. “No One Understands Me”

It’s easy to feel alone in our struggles. We assume that our pain, our thoughts, our experiences are unique. But if we dared to open up, we’d realize that most people feel the same way—just in different ways.

4. “I Have to Do Everything on My Own”

We act like asking for help is a sign of weakness. We push through exhaustion, thinking independence equals strength. But real strength is knowing when to lean on others. No one makes it through life alone.

5. “I Can’t Change”

When we fail at something, we tell ourselves, “This is just how I am.” But humans are designed to change. Every small choice shapes us into someone new. The person we were yesterday doesn’t have to define who we are tomorrow.

6. “It’s Too Late”

We give up on dreams because we think we missed our chance. But life isn’t a strict timeline. Success, love, happiness—these things don’t have deadlines. The only time it’s truly “too late” is when we stop trying.

7. “If I Ignore It, It’ll Go Away”

Problems don’t disappear just because we pretend they don’t exist. Whether it’s a feeling, a fear, or a situation, avoiding it only makes it stronger. Facing it is the only way to free ourselves.

8. “I Have to Be Perfect”

Perfection is an illusion. The more we chase it, the more we feel like failures. The truth is, the people we admire aren’t perfect—they just keep going, despite their imperfections.

9. “I Shouldn’t Feel This Way”

We judge our emotions, telling ourselves we shouldn’t be sad, anxious, or angry. But emotions don’t work like that. The more we suppress them, the more they control us. Accepting them is the first step to healing.

10. “I’m the Only One Who Feels This Way”

The biggest lie of all. We think we’re alone in our struggles, that no one else understands. But if we opened up, we’d see that so many others feel exactly the same.

The Truth?
These lies aren’t real—but we make them real by believing them. The moment we start questioning them, they lose their power. And when they lose their power, we become free.
