A High School Crush That Added Up
Guys in my high school
made fools of their pride,
flying over themselves
to complement Valerie.
I didn’t see any reason for the fuss.
Valerie gave off the aura
of another bombshell blonde
with an axe to grind against guys.
Valerie would look at me
in a tenth-grade math class,
but it wasn’t a pleasant look.
Valerie had it out for me
because I didn’t say she
was God’s gift to men.
Red-faced, she broke her gaze.
I grinned.
And that’s when love
began to add up
over the blessings
that I could count.
How could I solve
an equation without
an end in hindsight?
“And that’s how you met Mom?” Stella said.
“That’s the stories we’re sticking with, dear.” Valerie’s eyes still danced twenty years later.
“So, finish your math,” I said.
“You might fall for a boy,” Valerie said, winking at her.
Stella blushed.
