They were just starting out — a new couple, and a friend of mine started seeing this girl with a reputation. Love wasn’t the only thing they were addicted to. Drugs had a tight grip on them both, squeezing the life out of their chances at a fresh start.
He had fought like hell to get clean from meth before they met because, in January, he had almost died. She, on the other hand, had no intention of stopping. Everyone knew her reputation. It wasn’t just that she used — it was how she got her fix. The rumors were ugly, whispered with knowing smirks: She’ll do anything for a hit. Anything.
I didn’t judge her. When I finally met her, she seemed nice enough. Her past didn’t matter to me. What mattered was my friend. He was in love, blind to the disaster he was walking into. I didn’t want to watch him burn. Many of his friends were worried about him getting hurt.
At first, he tried to resist, to keep his distance from the drugs she drowned in. Love — or maybe fear — made him weak. He couldn’t stand the idea of her running off, chasing dealers, and cheating to get high. So he made a decision, one that destroyed him.
He started getting the drugs for her.
