Finding Happiness in the Small Things
Corresponding with my friend’s son puts everything in perspective
When I’m feeling anxious, it can be difficult to be optimistic about the future. I find that I turn inward and worry about my problems and concerns.
My negative thoughts can circulate in a vicious circle, creating a dead end in my thinking.
That’s why I feel fortunate to participate in a program that my friend’s son created, which he calls, Timely Texts. As someone living with spina bifida, the program enables him to keep in touch with others and it provides a free, yet highly valuable service to his “customers”.
How the texting works
When I signed up for the program, I was told that I could request a text as frequently as I wanted and could designate the subject matter. My husband chose to be texted once per week with a fact about rivers.
I chose to be texted every day with one item of gratitude.
Each day, my friend’s son texts me with something that he’s grateful for, and I text with something that I’m grateful for. A typical text exchange goes something like this:
Him: “Grateful for cupboards.”
