Did You Blink? Some Thoughts on The America I See Versus the One Most Choose To Ignore

Yet again, America goes full America and people are shocked. This isn’t news, people, and it never has been.

I often overheard Momma asking the same question over and over growing up:

“Did God blink?”

She would do so each time a heinous tragedy occurred somewhere in the world, whether it was a random killing, a massacre, a bombing, a school shooting, an epidemic, or a pandemic. They were the rare or unprecedented events that became more common each passing day. How could God let these things happen?

Did God blink?

I don’t know if she expected an answer. Maybe she got one when she went to Heaven a few years ago.

As I choose not to question an omnipotent being, I’ve never asked God myself. Besides, I don’t believe there is an answer that would make this all okay. How could there be?

Now, as an adult myself, I see people trying to make sense of the world we live in, just as Momma once did. They’re confused about the random killings, the massacres, the bombings, the school shootings, and the epidemics and pandemics.
