5 Ways I Curb My Anxiety
Things I do personally to help stay calm.
I remember as a kid being a go with the flow type of person. As I grow older symptoms of anxiety have shown themselves. I am 25 now and through the years I have found some healthy coping mechanisms. The first one goes hand and hand with being in the moment.
1. Taking Little Breaks:
Whenever I am in the middle of doing a lot of things at once. Which can get overwhelming causing high anxiety. I believe in taking a little break to focus on something I haven’t before. It could be a bug on the ground or a funky cloud in the sky. Taking in these small moments reminds me that not everything has to be taken so seriously, and it steers the attention off of whatever is causing me anxiety.
2. Not Giving In:
This one took me a while to develop. It is really hard to go against what the body is signaling wrong. I learned that the more I push away from what the anxiety is telling me to do. The more beneficial my life got. I noticed when I gave in to the feeling the worse my anxiety got. It seems simple, but in practice it is much more difficult. Once I got over those first few humps all the other anxiety filled situations fell through to new opportunities.
3. Quit Nicotine:
This one is more personal, but I’m sure it resonates with some of you. I used to smoke cigarettes then I vaped for a while. I realized after some time that instead of the nicotine easing my anxiety like it used to. I started to get more anxious even in social situations, and I was considered the social butterfly of any group. So, I knew it was time to put the vape down for good. It has now been almost a year since I have had any nicotine. In that time, I’ve realized my anxiety has diminished quite significantly.
4. Hug Someone:
This one is mainly for when the anxiety is really high, and you need someone to ground to. This is what my wife and I do when she is having a rough time. It’s even more effective if the one who isn’t going through it gets the person who is to breathe deep like they are. With these breaths and a little squeeze to create some pressure it usually creates a good calming effect.
5. Take CBD:
This one is not going to be for everyone. Personally, it has changed my life. It helps me feel more like myself, and in a weird way is more energizing than caffeine. I’ve been using CBD for about a week now writing this, and I could not praise it enough. Of course, you have to find the right brand and the best way for you to intake it. Once you figure that out it works great. I’m not condoning any drug use. I’m just throwing out what is working for me and hopefully it will help someone out there.
Dealing with any mental health is a challenge. Everyone is different so not all of these tips will be useful to everyone. My mission with this list is to reach someone out there that could be struggling and might be lost on where to even start to try and get better.
