The Best Detectives in the (Murder Mystery) Business
The greatest of gentlemen sleuths & hard-boiled privates eyes
I don’t like being scared.
I never choose to watch horror movies, and if a friend forces me to sit through one, I spend half the time with my eyes firmly shut.
I don’t like haunted houses, ghost stories, or true crime podcasts.
That’s why it's strange that one of my favorite genres of books is murder mystery novels — they have blood and death and things like that.
But I love them for the mystery, not the fear factor— and more specifically for the detectives.
I love the gentlemen sleuth with the posh accent, the hardboiled, down-and-out detectives of noir thrillers, the smarter-than-any-adult, reckless teen detective whizz-kid. I love them all.
I love when authors create detective characters that last through several books — old friends we watch grow through a series, becoming comfortable acquaintances from the first page of a new installment.
So, I thought instead of ranking my favorite murder-mystery books — which would be too hard — I’d rank my four favorite detectives instead, in a by-no-means definitive list.
