If this were a Sam Mendes movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy or Florence Pugh, you would have already heard of it. By the way, no offense to Mr. Mendes, Ms. Taylor-Joy, or Ms. Pugh. Just using them as examples here; I’m actually a big fan.
But the truth is that is a small Mexican film directed by a Mexican female director, and, at its heart, you find a Mexican woman who is not Salma Hayek. Again, no offense to her; you can relax. Therefore, we should consider ourselves lucky it has gotten any kind of buzz at all.
This movie is so good that it would have been impossible to keep it completely hidden.
Who is The Chambermaid?
Evelia — also known as Eve — is the titular chambermaid. She works at a very fancy hotel in Mexico City, and, from the very first scene, we watch as she tirelessly goes from room to room, picking up people’s shit.
She makes beds, cleans bathrooms, wipes surfaces, and even takes care of babies, all the while doing her best to keep a smile on her face. As the movie progresses, we learn she is a young single mother who rarely gets to see her child because she works all day long. But she wishes for things to change…
