Black Mirror’s Eulogy from Memory to Digital Legacy
Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.
— Oscar Wilde
What happens if our final goodbye is based on a constructed version of who we were? According to IMDb, the story of Eulogy revolves around a lonely man who discovers a potent piece of cutting-edge technology that lets users enter old photos and immerse themselves in strong and intense feelings in the past.
The memory of Carrol is blurred and faceless because the main character, Philip, has tried to forget her due to a traumatic breakup that changed the course of his life. During the episode, pictures become open doors to the memories, and we follow Philip (Paul Giamatti) as he rediscovers, uploads, shares, and even edits those as a part of a collective act of tribute and mourning for Carroll’s funeral.
In my opinion, this episode was a haunting meditation on memory, loss, and how we choose to remember. It was full of beauty, and since then, it has remained with me.
