What We’re Really Searching For
I once met a man who told me,
“Son, everybody is seeking something. We’re just waiting for the right story”.
We were talking about the idea of faith and why it seems inherent to the majority of mankind to want to believe in something. Every culture, every tribe, every nation has some degree of faith in a deity or supernatural power. They all have a story.
Some of us may never be fully convinced by any story. Any legend told by the mouths of man seems arbitrary or farfetched. But that doesn’t change the fact that perhaps we really do desire to believe in something. An intrinsic longing for explanation.
There are countless burning questions that religions have tried to answer for us. Often we are left with more questions than answers. Outlandish stories and fables of different characters, fictional or not, that demonstrate what, why, and who to believe. We’re left with choosing the best one. Subconsciously, we all ask ourselves: what tells the best story?
The same man from earlier taught me that the best story wins, and that is essentially what faith boils down to. In his mind, it was the story of Christ’s redemption of humanity and His defeat over sin and death. Unusually, for somebody so sure of his beliefs, this man was incredibly understanding of why other people do not believe, or…
