POETRY | CONTEMPLATION ON LIFE
The ‘If’ Sutra
A poem
If I have ever
seen a mountain and climbed to the summit
If I have ever
mapped a city in another country,
walked off a plane and rode a bus
to find me… arrived
If I have ever
got on a sled
in the middle of winter,
slid gloriously down a hill
to its inevitable plateau
a plateau where the grass
— rose to my ankles in Spring
— to my knees by Summer
If I have ever
done any of these things
how could I ever be surprised
at arriving on my last day?
at arriving at the end?
For I have been leaving,
traveling
and arriving
everyday of my life.
