I Thought I Was Failing, But I Was Just Growing Sideways
There’s a seed inside you that hasn’t given up yet, and keeps calling
April planted a seed.
May saw rain
not a trickle but a torrent of water.
The seed fell on its side
unsure if it could still grow
so it lay there
with its face half warmed by the sun
the underside, cold and dark
the absence of warmth
confirming its abandonment.
It lay there
cold and alone for twenty-one days
twenty-one long nights.
It thought about its life
where it had been, who it had met
where it longed to go.
It saw itself walking across oceans
flying among the clouds
climbing pyramids
and dancing with the birds in the rainforest.
It lived in dreams
and rewrote its nightmares
turning dark thoughts into magic
confusion into possibility
and pain into direction.
