The Far-Right Could Soon Dominate the West
My son didn’t realise how weird this is. I feel guilty that this is what we’ve become.
“Germany could soon have its first far-right government in power since 1945,” I said as my eighteen-year-old son and I chatted while we walked the dog the other day.
His answer threw me. “No way, there must have been some since then.”
In seconds, it dawned on me that he had never realised how strange the modern Western World had become. Our once reliable politics had become infiltrated by extremists intent on limiting freedoms and ignoring problems inconvenient to their worldview.
He didn’t know that having the far-right at such levels of popularity were things Europe hadn’t endured since the Second World War, that the lessons of those evil years were dripping away.
He is not naive, either. He saw through vacuous virtue signaling before I did and, in his one year at a private school, witnessed its opposite nasty little twin: entitlement.
