BEING / SELF EXPRESSION
Breaking the barriers of opinion expression.
Don’t hold back your thoughts.
According to ancient Greek sage, Plato, opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance. People often shy away from expressing their opinions because such opinions may turn out unpopular or inconsistent with what is generally accepted as the correct position.
The urge to suppress one’s opinion due to uncertainty about it’s correctness or otherwise is one of the limitations to not just free speech but self confidence. Life experience has shown on several occasions that no opinion or position is entirely correct or wrong, in this light, people should feel free and unrestricted to express their opinions as long as such opinions do not encourage hate, violence or negative racial or religious profiling.
The innovations or inventions that have shaped human existence would not have come to light without the courage of men and women who have dared the norm and challenged the so-called 'popular' opinions.
In an increasingly globalized and digital world, different shades of opinion should be welcomed to boost conversations and innovations.
The desire to oppose or suppress opinions or ideas that we consider to be against the ideas we hold is almost innate in humans, one should then not be surprised by the fact that authoritarian governments have held and still hold sway in different parts of the world. The confidence to hold opinions irrespective of their unpopularity with the norm should be imbibed in the young ones.
The fear to dare means the desire to stick with the status quo, be it good or bad.
