My Cats and I

How I became a cat person

It all started quite unexpectedly.

Kiki, an orange tabby, belonged to my best friend who lived in Montana. She had decided to move to Puerto Rico and couldn’t take him along, so she left him with her mother. I was moving to Montana just weeks after she left and I was to be his new caretaker. This came as a surprise. It seemed her mother wanted no new animals, but was convinced to take Kiki until I arrived. Sneaky!

I didn’t mind too much, he was such a unique cat and he would go home to his family in a few years. He was raised by toddlers with big dogs in the home. I’m fairly certain he thought he was a dog. Many of his mannerisms were dog-like. He even gave kisses on command!

We moved into our first place together and he was originally an indoor/outdoor cat, so I followed suit. I do have reservations about outside cats, but this guy was not happy inside and made sure I knew.
He got in a fight and tested positive for feline leukemia. Doh! My fears manifested. The vet recommended euthanasia on the spot. He wasn’t even my cat, how could I put him down?

It was at this point that my best friend and I decided that I should have full autonomy over Kiki and…
