I’ve spent years in conversation with Christians despite being an atheist myself, not as a debate partner, not as an antagonist, but as someone who deeply respects the transformative potential of their faith.
The radical love of Jesus — the compassion, the humility, the concern for the poor and the outcast — has shaped Western morality in ways that even nonbelievers should appreciate.
But something has changed. More and more, I hear Christians express an unease, not with their faith but with its public perception. They still believe. They still pray. But many no longer feel comfortable calling themselves “Christian” in public.
They don’t want to be associated with what Christianity, in America at least, seems to have become. And the source of their discomfort isn’t some external attack on their faith. It’s not atheists, secularists, or liberals who have tainted the image of Christianity.
It’s Donald Trump.
