At seventeen, I was a naive kid full of ego with no actual knowledge of adulting. Despite that, I was sure that I would do it better than any other person ever had. I’d sit and daydream of everything falling in place as if by magic and my life working out better than anyone else’s.
I was probably in the middle of one of these daydreaming sessions when my grandfather took me aside one day and gave me some advice.
“Live your life without regrets.”
He had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and had begun to exhibit some symptoms. But he wanted to tell me this before the disease had a chance to rob him of his memories and self-sufficiency. “You’re going to college soon, and I want you to remember what I’m telling you. Make sure you don’t do anything in your life that you will regret later on.” Then he gave me a sad smile that told me he had many regrets.
I nodded respectfully but didn’t pay much attention because my life would be different. It wasn’t until a couple of years later, when I was a sophomore in college, that his words came back to me.
