AI Has The Skill To Beat Humans In Debate
But it is not designed to tell the truth
A new study published in suggests that a chatbot can outperform many humans in debates with just minimal knowledge about its opponent. However, researchers suggest it raises concerns regarding AI’s ability to influence public opinions online.

What and how they performed the study
For the research, three hundred individuals were matched with human rivals in an internet debate. A different group consisting of three hundred participants was matched with ChatGPT. They needed to discuss specific subjects.
They needed to talk about several topics, including the benefits of school uniforms and a prohibition on fossil fuels in the United States. In half of the discussions, both human and AI participants received details about the opposing side, including gender, education level, and political inclination.
In the absence of that information, both humans and AI performed similarly in a debate. However, equipped with additional knowledge, AI generated improved arguments. In 64 percent of the instances, the chatbot succeeded in altering the opponent’s viewpoint more…
