Anastasia may have gotten the broad strokes of the plan, but we still had a lot to go over if we had a prayer of keeping our stories straight before the cops arrived. When they did, the vampire put on her best helpless waif mask and cowered against a wall.
For my part, I stood with my arms spread with the sirens lit up the alleyway, my gun and my wand dangling harmlessly in each hand.
Their guns came out on cue. I knelt down per their shouted demands, gently set the weapons on the ground, and waited for them to cuff me.
Chicago’s Finest made a liar out of me. I told Max I shouldn’t be that long. They kept us at the district station for hours. At least they let me call her before too long so she wouldn’t send a search party.
They kept me and Ana separated. Hopefully, they were treating her like the victim she was pretending to be. She didn’t let on up front that she was a vampire, but it would become a key part of her story at some point, so I could only hope that part went well. As I sat in the interrogation room, thinking about all the variables I hung on hope, more than a few doubts…
