FICTION | A TASTE FOR LIFE
After The Storm
The escape from the monsters
The forest’s wispy breath is filled with a crisp and clean pine fragrance, a scent made sharper by the quiet after the storm.
The downpour had drenched her, and May shivered involuntarily. The ground was wet, and mud puddles all around her shimmered with the reflections of a fractured sky. It mirrored the way her existence had fractured, that very day.
May struggled on through the dense forest. She carried nothing but her thoughts, memories and feelings. The weight of her thoughts became a heavy, unbearable burden as she dragged herself through the thick grass. Yet, she must move on!
Above the green canopy of leaves of the trees, a rainbow stretched across the blue sky, its myriad colours sparkling with the fragile promise of new hope. It seemed so pristine as compared to the events that had unfolded just hours ago.
Their village had seen the monsters swooping down upon them, intent on destruction. These were not monsters in the literal sense, but people who wore camouflage and uniforms. All of the inhabitants of the tiny village had fled in different directions as the monsters set fire to their huts and belongings.
