A flick through her patchwork of notes one more time failed to glue the necessary thoughts together. Just one, she hoped, just one spark could kick her mind into gear. In a way, the constant droning customers at the cafe made usually pushed her mind to focus, but today it seemed even this had its limits. No matter how hard she thumbed through scribbles and post-it notes, inspiration eluded her. Breaking point seemed imminent, and with one last sip of her coffee she began to call it quits.

He noticed her from afar, buried in a mess of files as his cappuccino arrived. After studying her it became evident that now was as good a time as any to strike up a conversation. He started towards her.

“Hello.”

A friendly voice somewhere from the aether was all it took to unravel her concentration, and she snapped back without looking up. “I don’t need a refill.”

“No, I’m sorry. I couldn’t help noticing. You seem to be lost.”

Lost? The word stung her, seemingly out of place in a coffee shop conversation between people, but perfectly describing her present condition. Now she looked up. Standing before her was a well-dressed man.
