In Indonesia, two common pieces of advice often come up when life gets tough: “jalani aja” (just go with the flow) or “coba dipikir lagi baik-baik” (try to think it over thoroughly). While these expressions come from a good place, they can sometimes seem opposing or even unhelpful. Should we let life take its course or obsess over every decision?

When advised to “jalani aja”, it feels like an encouragement to let go of control and have faith that everything will turn out okay. While this mindset can be liberating, it might also feel dismissive. Imagine confiding in someone about a difficult situation, only to be told, “Don’t stress about it, just go with the flow.” You may leave feeling as if your worries aren’t being taken seriously or your fears are irrational.

On the flip side, “coba pikir lagi baik-baik” prompts you to pause and thoughtfully consider your options. This advice appeals to our instinct to avoid mistakes and minimize risks. But overthinking can paralyze you, trapping you in a loop of “what ifs” without making any progress. At times, distinguishing between being prudent or simply anxious becomes difficult.
