Not Quite Culture Shock, But Something Similar

My husband and I have been fortunate enough to see a number of places in different parts of the world, although we haven’t yet experienced Asia or Africa. Something interesting I’ve noticed when being in a new city or country for the first time is that I’m somewhat hesitant to be too ‘adventurous’ or strike out on my own. I have several friends who are more courageous travelers, even when they’re in a place that’s new to them.

While I love traveling, seeing new sites, and learning about new cultures, I notice that I’m much more comfortable visiting a place for the second time. It’s as if I’m not quite sure ‘how it will go’ the first time I’m in a new city or country — even if it’s a place where English is a primary language. I’m semi-fluent in Spanish and less so in German, but I do acknowledge that traveling to areas where I get a chance to practice those languages, I do pretty well. That said, when I’m in a place for the first time, I find myself very hesitant to interact more actively with local merchants and others. This may be part of being a willing, but somewhat ‘timid traveler.’
