Are Shipping Containers the Future of Housing

A feasible trend or a shipwreck?

After months upon months of seeing these modern corrugated metal shipping container homes pop up on my feed, I decided to finally dig in.

How did this idea even come about? Are they an all-round better alternative to traditional homes? Are they really that cheap? Are they as sustainable as they claim?

Or am I getting catfished?

History

Before we even get into that let’s talk about how shipping container homes even became a thing. The first-ever shipping container home on record was built in 1987 by Phillip Clark. Clark even patented his method of turning steel shipping containers into a habitable building. The first American shipping container home was built by architect Peter DeMaria.

The shipping container home trend starting taking off in 2012, when a couple in Australia, Todd and De Miller, lost their home in a flood and decided to build a 6,000 ft² shipping container home that was featured on television. And since then, tiny home living and shipping container homes have taken the world by storm,
