Motherhooa were of being both a private and public affair. On one hand, we have Mother’s Day where we celebrate motherhood and we share social media posts etc about how much we love our mothers. On the other, we live in a post-colonial, patriarchal society that is constantly degrading, belittling and disempowering women, and that includes our mothers.

Yet because of the public image of “The Mother”, we’re supposed to pretend that mothers are somehow exempt from patriarchal conditioning, and our collective traumas.

There’s an unrealistic expectation of mothers to be unaffected and perfect in their mothering, one that pretends like they haven’t been affected by the systems we are seeking to dismantle, or the conditioning we are unlearning.

We see this, especially from people who seek to uphold patriarchal standards, yet they themselves indisputably came from a woman. They separate their mother from how they view or treat women.
