Challenges of living full-time in a van

From someone living in one for more than 3 months

2 min readJul 6, 2024

After some more time and experiences I’m back with an update from my previous article.

So here are the challenges, faced as a van life newbie:

  1. Temperatures
20+ degrees and you won’t be able to sleep at night. Below 10 and you’re going to struggle with getting out of bed. Living in a van, despite good insulation, is pretty much like living in a can. Optimal temperature: 15 degrees. Might consider moving to Scotland for the summer.
  2. Food
In hot weather, the food is rotting away along with your body which seems to turn liquid as soon as you enter the oven on wheels.
  3. Managing different schedules
It feels like I’m a teenager again — the last one in the house to go to sleep and wake up. The only difference is — I’m an adult now and my partner has a crazy work schedule. I can’t just simply go and sleep on a couch, appreciate your sofas everyone!
  4. Surviving being ill
In my first month I managed to get a tonsilitis and a stomach bug. The takeaway from the experience that going to stay in a hotel is a must. I’m pretty much sure the worst is already behind us, touch wood.
