Sometimes, we become so obsessed with the big pictures in life — with all their vibrant colors, movements, status symbols, and larger-than-life personalities — that we lose sight of a basic fact: that all those fantastic, bold displays of growth and success are detailed collections of millions of small elements working together to create the illusion of massiveness.
Trillions of grains form the illusion of white sandy beaches we’re drawn to for our relaxing vacations. The aircraft that carries passengers consists of thousands of elements strategically connected, creating the illusion of wholeness.
The historic buildings I saw through my hotel window in Copenhagen, Denmark, were an assembly of individual bricks strategically placed to create form and detail. And let’s not forget that each brick is composed of single grains held together by a specialized bonding agent, creating the illusion of a solid component.
