Addressing Food Security in India: The Challenge of Feeding 9 Billion People
What would happen if you need to struggle to get one proper meal for the day? Isn’t it scary? Many nations are facing this problem and it is increasing day by day.
The concept of Food Security is multi-dimensional. According to FAO, Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
The ever-growing population demands food making Food Security a big challenge for India. Despite India being one of the world’s top producers of rice and wheat, the consumption ratio is less. India has the highest number of undernourished people in the world.
Situation in India
Food insecurity is one of the significant obstacles that pose a threat to sleeping on an empty stomach. Ranging from malnutrition to cognitive problems and in severe cases, death, food insecurity is a persistent evil yet to be eradicated from society.
In (GFSI) 2022, India ranked 68 out of 113 countries with an overall score of 58.9%. The four factors on which it was based are — affordability, availability, quality, and, safety.
