How Being a Team Player is Hurting Your Career

We have all pitched in when needed. We have all burned the candle at both ends to meet a tight deadline. This is not that conversation.

In this era of anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) where all discussions of our otherness is used against us, finding information from the usual reliable sources is even difficult, intentionally. . As a woman who began her tech career in the late 1990s, this is infuriating.

For Black and Hispanic women, the numbers are even lower and I fear will plummet with efforts to recruit and support disappearing daily.

What’s At Issue?

Picture this: you’ve started your career eager and ready to plunge in and make an impression. Your boss (or other leader) asks you to “pitch in” and help because a colleague or maybe even a superior has moved on and now that work is left incomplete. It’s important work and will “increase your visibility.” This is just the opportunity you need. Or is it?
