Yesterday I wasted some time on social media scrolling through an ungodly amount of travel content. My purpose: escaping into a world of pristine turquoise beaches and vicariously feeling the hot white sand with the toes of Instagram travel influencers.

It sort of worked. I felt good, relaxed, and was already planning an exotic vacation, plus a weekend getaway, when I suddenly came across a different kind of reel: American travelers in Europe trying to hide their nationality.

The reason? Shame. I’ve seen it before in the comments to my articles: American citizens are feeling shame and apologizing for what’s happening in their country. With…
