The $10 minimum payout threshold
I’m not pleased with this new Partner Program update
Starting August 1st, 2024, Medium will pay writers when they reach a $10 minimum earnings. I can see why they changed their payment policy in this way, but this is not a friendly update for writers with smaller earnings.
Why?
I can only speculate, but might it be to reduce administrative costs for Medium as a corporation? Specifically, those costs might be tied to processing very small payments. If so, such a reduction in costs might help generate revenue for improving Medium as a platform.
I honestly don’t know how complicated or easy the current payment system is administratively. Maybe it has impacted Medium’s financial sustainability and needs improvement.
Who knows.
Only Medium can explain why they are implementing this type of payment update.
What Could Be The Potential Benefits?
There might actually be some benefits for Medium’s readers and partly for Medium’s writers, and hence, for both.
- Motivation for Writers: Maybe writers will try to write higher-quality content that attracts more readers to reach the payout threshold faster. But, vice versa, this can backfire…
